The Meridians

The Meridian System
Connecting Everything in Your Being,Body and MInd

Imagine a road map, with a profusion of points, woven into a web by routing lines. Now imagine this system in 3-D for your body. A vast network of invisible energy pathways connecting to each other and to every atom, cell, tendon, bone, organ, each centimeter of skin — everything in your body! They link the upper portion with the lower and the interior with the surface, so that nothing is truly separate.

Add further dimensions interconnected into this 3-D body “map”. Your mind, your emotions, and spirit — everything, conscious and subconscious, within you. These amazing pathways are the meridians, and they form your body and all invisible aspects of your being into an intercommunicating whole.

Connection with the Organs
The twelve major meridians run on each side of the body. One side is mirroring the other. Additionally two Meridians for Governing and Conception, circulate along the center of corpus and head. Each meridian corresponds to an internal organ. And each organ (Liver, Gallbladder, Heart,Small Intestine, Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Large Intestine, Kidney, Urinary Bladder, San Jiao, Pericardium), with its own physiological and invisible psychological and energy functions, not only depend on the other organs but also on the greater meridian network.

They Carry Energy, Blood, and Information
Qi flows continuously through the meridians, yet also transmit information to and among your organs. Instantaneously they send signals to raise or lower your body temperature, signs that your body needs to release water, signals to regulate emotion, among countless others. Your body is constantly communicating with itself through innumerable messages flowing through your meridians. These life-giving energy pathways help coordinate the work of the organs and keep your body balanced by regulating its functions.

You Are Healthy, If Qi Flows Freely
TCM believes, that as long as enough Qi flows freely through your meridians and your organs work in harmony your body can remain healthy. This means that when your body’s meridian system functions well, you are well. Yet due to a number of causes — one common example being excess stress — they can become clogged or even blocked. When this happens it affects the function of the corresponding organ and ultimately the whole body-mind-spirit.

Receiving and Relaying Healing Stimulation
Meridians are incredibly sensitive. They can carry the effects of stimulation in the form of healing energy throughout your entire body and mind. It is this special quality that allows the various TCM treatment modalities to work.

The Extra Eight Meridians

ENGLISH | DEUTSCH | ELLHNIKA

Normal physiological functioning also depends on the proper regulation of the standard nomenclatures of the eight meridians. Because the majority of uterine qi and blood travels within these meridians, the relationship of the uterus and the extra meridian network is extremely close.

The extra eight meridians include the Governor Vessel, Conception Vessel, Thoroughfare Vessel, Girdling Vessel, Yin Link Vessel, Yang Link Vessel, Yin Heel Vessel and Yang Heel Vessel.

Unlike the twelve regular meridians, these eight vessels are not distributed regularly but are situated in a rather complex pattern among the regular meridians. Their main function is to strengthen the links between the twelve regular meridians and to regulate qi and blood circulation.
They have special relationships with the liver, kidney, uterus, brain and marrow and thus influence these structures physiologically and pathologically.

These vessels do not possess direct connections or interior-exterior relationships with the zang organs and fu organs.
